  • Open card sort: Users create their own categories and labels. Best for discovering natural groupings.
  • Closed card sort: You provide categories, users sort items into them. Best for validating a proposed structure.
  • Hybrid: Provide some categories but allow users to create new ones if needed.

Running a card sort:

  • Prepare cards: List 30-50 items (pages, features, content types) on individual cards.
